Nerves relay information and mediate body functions by transmitting electrical impulses: bioelectrical signals. The wound induces damage to the nerves and this damage consequently elicits bioelectrical impulses from the periphery to the brain (afferent signals). This information causes the brain to send back "healing" signals to the wound. This is how our body works. Thus, the wound should be considered as a systemic (rather than "local") neurophysiological phenomenon.
